Help! My Supervisor is Way Younger than I am, how do I manage?

Subject: Help! My Supervisor is Way Younger than I am, how do I manage?

Hello Nurse Consultant,

I recently went through a change of career and picked nursing as my new career. I am of an older generation and in my former life, I was in a management position until a major change.

I recently graduated nursing school and got employed to a Medical Surgical floor. My supervisor on this floor is as young as my eldest child. She is amazing at what she does but I feel a tad resentful taking instructions from her. I recognize that being resentful is unhealthy and not warranted but still cannot help feeling as I do.

Any suggestions to help me get through this hump?

Thank you,

Old Grouch

Dear “Old Grouch”,Help! My Supervisor is Way Younger than I am, how do I manage?

First thing I would say is well done on recognizing that what you feel is unhealthy. You also acknowledged that your supervisor is excellent at what she does, which is another good thing.

Seeing as you were in your past life, one can understand why you may feel the way that you do. But you must understand that it is no one fault most especially your supervisor’s. She earned her position.

The world has changed and you must change with it or become extinct. Try a different approach- get to know your supervisor and you will find that there is respect. I won’t encourage you suppressing those resentful feeling but rather to bring it to the fore and deal with it.

Here is a practical exercise for you, get out a pen and write down what you feel and why you feel that way. Don’t over think it and at the exercise, you will find that your resentments are misguided.

Good luck in your new career and job. You will excel!

How Financially Frugal Are You?

How financially frugal are you? Making plans for retirement should include prudent ways of saving. Nursing is a good profession to make a living and still save. Vacations are great and very necessary but you also have to remember to save for your retirement. Here are some ways to consider

1. Create a Different Account- With this account, what happens is that you schedule a certain amount to be taken out of your salary or pay every pay period. It is best to be automatic, so that way you don’t think about it and it comes out of your account anyway. This savings has a way of adding up.Finacially Frugal

2. Be Mindful of Your spending (expenses)- if you don’t need it, don’t buy it. And always keep receipts for when you do buy it and get back home and find that you didn’t really want it at all.

3. Cut down Costs- Having stuff that you don’t need is simply having money go down the drain. Example, if you only watch cable like twice to thrice weekly, then it does not make sense to keep paying that cable bill. Get rid of it!

4. Buy Quality-  Insanity is trying something and expecting different results. Likewise, if you are going to buy a product that you know would last a long time, be sure to invest in a quality product. It would be senseless to buy an inferior product, watch it break and then go back and re-buy a different product. That is twice the money that you could have spent differently.

How to Resign Right

Resigning right is a good soft skill to know as it can come in handy when you need it most. We have all been there, you accepted a job that you thought was going to be a great fit, only to get into the job and realize that you had made a huge mistake. You don’t want to live a life of having to wake up every single day dreading to go to work, so how do you extricate yourself from that situation without burning bridges.

Resignation

  1. Proper Resignation- Follow your company’s resignation notice guideline in resigning right. Unless specifically told  and in writing not to do so, be sure to work out your full notice and give your 100 percent best as you work out that notice.
  2. Maintain Relationships- Just because you are leaving does not mean that you should burn your relationships, especially the good ones that you have had, so do your best to leave whilst still being on good terms with your co-workers
  3. Don’t Bad-Talk- It is a small world, so unless you know that you will NEVER run into anyone from your previous employment, it is best not to bad talk your previous place. If an exit interview is needed, by all means do give one but be diplomatic about it all.
  4. Have Everything in Writing: There are excellent companies to work for out there, likewise there are companies who are unscrupulous, so be sure to get whatever agreements that you have in writing.
  5. Clear your Desk- Don’t wait till your last day to clear your desk. Clear it out slowly, and this means your e-mail account, voice messages etc. Whatever you do not want another person to have (and it does not interfere with normal company functioning) then be sure to clear it out

And remember, don’t ever feel guilty for resigning. You alone know your life’s journey, so do what you have to do to make that journey better. Just be sure to do it right.
